Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, OIH (IPA: [kɾɨʃˈtiɐnu ʁuˈnaɫdu]; born 5 February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira)[1] is a Portuguese footballer who plays for English Premier League club Manchester United and the Portuguese national team. In addition to winning the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League, he is a winner of the 2007 English PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.[2]

Johan Cruijff said in an interview on 2 April 2008, “Ronaldo is better than George Best and Denis Law, who were two brilliant and great players in the history of United.”[3]

Biography

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born to Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and José Dinis Aveiro. His second given name, “Ronaldo,” was chosen after then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan, who was his father’s favourite actor at the time.[4] He has one older brother, Hugo, and two older sisters, Elma and Liliana Cátia.

Steven George Gerrard, MBE (IPA: [ˈdʒɛrɑ:d]; born 30 May 1980 in Whiston, Merseyside) is an English footballer who plays for English Premier League club Liverpool F.C. and the England national team. He is usually employed in the box-to-box midfield role, although he has often been deployed as a right-sided midfielder and occasionally as a second striker. Gerrard, who has spent his entire career at Anfield, won his first UEFA Champions League in 2005 following Liverpool’s comeback in the final.

Early career

Gerrard started out playing for hometown team Whiston Juniors. He was noticed by Liverpool’s scouts and joined the Reds’ youth academy at the age of nine.[2] Gerrard had trials with various clubs at fourteen, including Manchester United F.C., which he claimed in his 2006 autobiography that this was “to pressure Liverpool into giving me a YTS contract.”[3] He signed his first professional contract with Liverpool on 5 November 1997.[3]
