Early career
Gerrard started out playing for hometown team Whiston Juniors. He was noticed by Liverpool’s scouts and joined the Reds’ youth academy at the age of nine.[2] Gerrard had trials with various clubs at fourteen, including Manchester United F.C., which he claimed in his 2006 autobiography that this was “to pressure Liverpool into giving me a YTS contract.”[3] He signed his first professional contract with Liverpool on 5 November 1997.[3]
